A lonely figure walked off Muirfield’s first tee at 8:10 Sunday morning. Two hours and 50 minutes later Tiger Woods, who played by himself, walked off the 18th green, shooting 40 over his final nine holes and putting up a 74 to finish a disastrous week in Ohio.
Woods spent some time with the media, blabbering about being caught in between swing patterns on Saturday when he shot his 85 and saying that he’s thinking about winning at the U.S. Open. Just another chapter from the Tiger Woods Book of Swing Denial.
Woods is lost. The only thing that went right is that he found his way back to his private jet and probably got back to Jupiter before the tournament leader, Justin Rose, teed off.
Sunday was a mixed bag for Woods, pretty much his new normal. He was two-under on the front but could not sustain. He finished dead last in the field at 14-over par, his second worst 72-hole total and a new low for him at this Memorial tournament he has dominated, winning it more times than anyone. Ever.
Woods spouted something about going home to rest, he has a sore finger or something like that.
He’s right about needing rest. It takes a lot of swings to shoot 85.
He won’t play again until he shows up for the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in two weeks.
