Tiger Woods was all smiles Sunday afternoon at Jack’s House.
No, Tiger did not win his sixth Memorial title.
He admitted going into Sunday’s final round at Muirfield Village that he didn’t have a shot at winning.
“I wanted to have something positive going into the Open,” Woods proclaimed.
He got something pretty positive.
Tiger made some noise early with five front nine birdies could have been six had he made an 11-footer at the nine. Still, he was nine-under for the tournament and shooting up the scoreboard.
At the 10th he stared at a six-and-a-half footer that would have gotten him to 10 but he missed. But then back-to-back birdies at 11 and 12 had the noise level at jet engine decibels.
But those would be the last, things got testy and two bogeys the rest of the way dropped Tiger back to nine-under but it was still good enough for a closing 67 and a top 10.
“I played really well today,” Woods said after tying for ninth. “I hit the ball so crisp and so solid. I wanted to get into double-digits (under par) today, that’s what I texted my buddies. I just didn’t stay there.”
Still, it was enough to get Woods in a good frame of mind for the U.S. Open in two weeks at Pebble Beach.
Tiger spent some time at Pebble before he flew to Columbus.
He said it was cold and rainy and the greens complexes were smaller than he remembered.
See you in two weeks, Tiger.
