Get ready Tulsa — looks like Tiger Woods will be in the field for the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills.
Woods showed up on Thursday and played 18 holes. Caddie Joe LaCava wasn’t in town and Gary Cozby, PGA Professional and director of golf at Southern Hills, was on the bag as Tiger walked all 18 holes.
Both Woods and Phil Mickelson put in their entries. Mickelson has not been on site, instead, he was spotted playing at Rancho Santa Fe this week.
Tiger made a similar scouting trip to Augusta National before The Masters then showed up to compete. Tiger won the PGA Championship the last time it was played at Southern Hills back in 2007.
Minjee Lee Shoots 63, Jin Young Ko Bounces Back with 64 At Palos Verdes:
Last week Aussie Minjee Lee played well enough to finish in a tie for third at the L.A. Open. On Thursday she played even better — she opened with a bogey-free, eight-under par 63 that put her at the top of the leaderboard at the inaugural Palos Verdes Championship.
World No. 1 Jin Young Ko was finally back on her game after a mighty struggle last weekend at the Wilshire Country Club. Ko shot 64 and was alone in second at seven-under par at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Lee was rested and it showed. “I took Monday off. Didn’t even come to the course,” said Lee, who was five-under par over her first nine holes. “Tuesday, I played nine holes and then I saw the other nine in the pro-am. I think it’s so hilly out here that you want to keep your legs fresh.”
Lee found the setup to her liking. “I think it’s just the way like the holes are set up,” Lee said. “There are a lot of birdie opportunities starting the front nine. Even like the first hole and the second and third, they’re all wedges in. I just think there are a lot of opportunities in a row that you can kind of capitalize on.”
Scoring was low for the most part — Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson inserted themselves into the conversation with two-under par 69s. Danielle Kang is still off her game a bit but managed to get into red numbers with a one-under par 70. Brooke Henderson remains out-of-sorts as she floundered her way to a 75.
Sixteen-year-old Anna Davis, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur winner, opened with a 71 in her first LPGA Tour start. “I think it was pretty much like every other tournament I would say,” Davis said. “There weren’t like as many people, but I’m expecting the next few days to see some more people out here. I wasn’t super nervous or anything.”
Davis’ round had her in a tie for 53rd and was right on the projected cut line.
