Tiger Woods has enough wins and majors for a half-dozen players to make it to the Hall Of Fame. But golf’s most decorated active champion will wait a while to go into “The Hall.”
Tiger was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame last March and would have been inducted in 2021 but the World Golf Foundation decided on Monday to delay the ceremonies until 2022 when they will take place the week of the Players Championship.
“Moving the ceremony back a year will give us a better opportunity to properly recognize and honor this important class,” said Greg McLaughlin, chief executive officer of the World Golf Foundation. “We look forward to shining a light on their achievements and inspiring future golfers around the world through this ceremony and celebration.”
Tiger benefited from a rule change this year that lowered the age-eligibility requirement from 50 to 45 and Tiger turns 45 on December 30. The class to be inducted with Woods includes Susie Maxwell Berning, Marion Hollins and former PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.
“Recognizing the game’s greatest players and contributors is an important endeavor and one our sport takes very seriously,” said World Golf Foundation board chairman and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan (aka The Sheriff Of Nottingham). “We are committed to regularly evaluating the selection process to ensure we approach it with both historical context and the future in mind.”
Tiger Woods will make his last appearance of 2020 next week at the PNC Championship in Orlando where he will play with son Charlie.
