It was pretty easy to see that Tiger Woods didn’t have it early on in his Friday round.
He missed his first tee shot badly to the left and struggled to hit fairways all day. He played the first five holes one-over, missing out on holes that yield birdies.
He managed to get to even par at the turn but then bogeys on four of the first five holes on the back nine sealed his fate. He shot 38 back there, finished five over (72-73) and missed the 36-hole cut.
“I just didn’t quite have it,” Woods freely admitted afterward, but reminding everyone that he was overjoyed to be the Masters champion.
“It’s disappointing. I’m not playing the weekend. It’s just the way it goes.”
Woods admitted that he wasn’t feeling all that well and that was evident earlier in the week when he chose to stay on his yacht Wednesday rather than get in some final practice on site.
“I made too many mistakes,” Woods continued. He hit only three fairways on Friday and once again his putter was uncooperative. “I did a lot of little things wrong. I couldn’t hit fairways and I couldn’t putt.”
Woods isn’t the only big name who won’t be around for the weekend.
John Rahm finished five-over and went home. So did Sergio Garcia.
But it was Woods the crowds turned out to see on Friday. Once again, his gallery was huge and they were screaming for him.
But as Tiger said, he just didn’t quite have it this week.
