Tiger Woods said he’s not all that familiar with the intricate grouping system at the WGC Match Play.
“All I know is that I need to win all three and I move on,” Woods said on Tuesday at Austin Country Club as he prepares to play in this event for the first time since. 2013.
“I’m looking forward to the fact I can focus on one guy,” said Woods, who will face rookie Aaron Wise in his first match. “I gotta go out and put a lot of pressure on him,” Woods said. “Casey (Oregon Ducks coach Martin) was my teammate at Stanford and he said a lot of good things about him (Wise).”
Woods is looking forward the challenge that could have him playing seven matches in five days. “It’s different, it’s not what I’m used to — it was win or go home. “Still, win six matches and you’re good to go.”
Woods pointed out that he has played most of his match play in the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup matches. “It’s all about the ebb and flow,” was how Woods described match play. “I can say that this year I have a lot of confidence compared to last year. “At the end of last year I gained a lot of confidence. Granted, I was fried but my body held up.”
Woods gave the update that his neck “feels good” this week.
Woods didn’t get away without questions regarding The Masters and the Augusta National golf course. “It is way more challenging off the tee than it used to be,” Woods was quick to point out. “Some of the strategy has changed as a result.”
But first things first — Woods has his first match ahead of him and he was glad to be in the field. “It’s been a while, I’m glad I worked my way back into this field.”
