Imagine for just a moment if Tiger Woods had been denied his 80th victory last Sunday.
Imagine, if you will, that Tiger Woods shot the low 72-hole score in the field and they awarded the Tour Championship title to Justin Rose instead.
Can you say revolt in the world of golf?
Well, that’s basically what the PGA Tour has set itself up for with this crazy, handicapping overhaul of the FedEx Cup.
Let’s take a look at how Sunday would have turned out with the wacky new system.
Bryson DeChambeau would have started the week 10-under par and he would have finished 11-under par — third place.
Justin Rose would have started the week eight-under par and finished 14-under par — WINNER!
Tiger Woods would have started the week two-under par and finished 13-under — LOSER! Second place, runner-up.
Can’t you hear the young John McEnroe screaming at the top of his lungs at the PGA Tour — “You CANNOT be serious!”
That’s what we’re screaming at Jay Monahan aka The Sherriff Of Nottingham.
You absolutely, positively cannot be serious.
He’s turned the Tour Championship and the final push for the FedEx Cup into a professional version of a Member-Guest tournament.
This is simply awful and the fact that had it been in place this year, golf would have been denied an incredible, magical moment.
That massive crowd that trailed Woods down the 18th fairway might just have poured over, grabbed Monahan and thrown him into the nearest pond.
This “overhaul” is simply one bad, awful idea.
No ifs, ands or buts about it.
