Your tournament host for this week’s PGA Tour event at stately Congressional Country Club is none other than Eldrick Woods himself.
He’s the biggest name on the property and he’s not playing, in fact, as he addressed the State of Tiger Woods, he revealed nothing new as to if and when he might tee it up again in competition.
“I’m still progressing, I’m still getting stronger,” Woods told everyone. “I’m just playing it week to week and I keep getting better, I keep getting physically better. I just hope that everything clicks in and I can do it sooner rather than later.”
Pretty vague, as Woods has been all along when it comes to if and when he will play again.
In the meantime, Rickie Fowler, who does a lot of commercial for tournament sponsor Quicken Loans, is the only name player in this week’s field. And Fowler’s been no ball of fire this season, he’s missed the cut in the first two majors of the season.
And speaking of majors, that’s another reason you won’t see any highly ranked players this week. Most will play at next week’s WGC Bridgestone event then head over to the U.K. for the Open Championship, which is right around the corner — July 14-17.
Then the season’s final major will play out just two weeks later when the PGA Championship is staged at Baltusrol, July 28-31.
It’s a wacky schedule this year, thanks to the Olympics.
As far as the Olympics, with Rory McIlroy out and Jason Day still considering if he wants to play, it doesn’t look like anyone’s too keen on heading to Rio.
