The weather became more forgiving Saturday in Wales and the old guys appreciated it.
Bernhard Langer, surprise, surprise, is in charge at the Senior Open Championship and the best modern links player of all time, shot his age at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.
Tom Watson, winner of five Open Championships and three Senior Opens showed he’s still got it with a four-under par 67.
“It was a pleasure to play out there today compared to yesterday,” Watson said, recalling Friday’s brutal weather that saw some players unable to break 90. “It was all offense today, it was a day to score.”
Langer took advantage as well, he snuck in a birdie at the final hole from seven feet to shoot 65 and will take a four-shot lead into Sunday’s finale. He’s in at five-under par, four better than Corey Pavin, who shot his own 65 and got to one-under.
Langer and Pavin are the only two players in the field under par.
Tom Lehman, who started the day tied for the lead, played in the final pairing and couldn’t get anything going, especially with the putter. Lehman shot 73 and fell eight shots behind Langer.
