The PGA Tour’s season-ending RSM Classic will be without its biggest name.
On Tuesday Houston Open winner Tony Finau withdrew from the championship at Sea Island. Per Finau’s “people” — Tony’s withdrawal from the tournament “was precautionary maintenance relative to a minor injury” — which was code for “Tony’s just too darned tired after winning last week.”
Finau’s spokesperson gave no specifics on said “minor injury.”
So with the No. 12 player in the world out, Sea Island now becomes largely a field of guys who live at Sea Island, and there’s a bunch of them including rebounding Harris English.
Over the years, there’s been an influx of PGA Tour players toGeorgia’s St. Simon’s Island. Davis Love III started the trend.
Love brought the golf amenities to their attention, Zach Johnson was one of them.
“I came up here to practice, and I’m thinking, ‘Man, I could live here,’ ” Johnson said. “From a work standpoint, I’ve got three or four places I can go and I can get a lot of work done. So, I mean from a golf standpoint, it’s second to none. It’s one of the top destinations, as far as I know. “The beauty of the place is everything else. It’s the people, it’s the mom-and-pop shops, it’s the food.”
Kuchar said the island has a small-town feel to it.
“It feels like a bit of a throwback in time,” he said. “You feel OK to let the kids ride their bikes down the street.”
And Love got everything started. “I think Davis kind of conditioned the island on how to treat and react to professional golfers that live down here,” Kuchar added. “He’s played such great golf for so many years it was just, ‘There’s Davis,’ and he was just one the regular guys. People would congratulate him and then go about their business.”
Technically, no one lives at Sea Island, that’s the name of the resort. To get there you go from Brunswick, cross two brides and your on St. Simon’s. Cross another bride at you’re at Sea Island where the field plays on the Seaside and Plantation courses the first 36 holes then the final two rounds will be on the Seaside course.
