Let’s face it, this celebrity sponsors-invite stuff into PGA Tour events has never been a great idea.
This week, retired Dallas quarterback Tony Romo is in the field at the Corales Puntacana Resort Classic (say that six times real fast) down in the Dominican Republic.
Sure it’s great when Romo plays in the AT&T or any other pro-am event on the PGA Tour. Tony’s got some game but he’s still AN AMATEUR.
Yes, Romo is a superb football analyst, did a great job alongside Jim Nance last season.
But a spot in a PGA Tour event? Yes, we understand, it gets a little attention for that event. It’s one of those wonderful “opposite-field” events that give “all the others” a place to play when they don’t qualify for a WGC field.
So yeah, Romo gets the sponsors invite.
As it turns out, for a few hours, Romo really hung in there. He was even-par through his first 12 holes.
Then golf happened — amateur golf.
Romo started a four-hole run of pure hacker misery. He went bogey-double-bogey-bogey on holes 13-16.
Overall, a weird front nine — three of everything — pars, bogeys, birdies. Even par. But 41 coming hole.
Just to put it all in context, he’s 14 shots off the pace of first-round leader Brice Garnett (63). On the back nine, Garnett clipped Romo by a whopping 11 shots.
Ouch.
At the end of the day, Romo’s 77 tied him for 127th.
Good news is he beat Guy Boros and D.A. Points. They both shot 79.
Further good news is that Tony can go home Friday along with Boros and Points.
Back to his local club where he belongs.
