In bit more than a week from now, the 2023 PGA Tour season will begin with a new look and that new look will be evident at the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
This 2023 Tournament of Champions will be the first of the PGA Tour’s “designed” or elevated events. Used to be for tournament winners only but this go-round will have players who meet the new qualifications.
Finishing in the top 30 of the FedExCup will once again earn players a tee time at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. Players who finished in the top 30 of the FedExCup were first allowed into the Sentry after the pandemic-marred 2020 season, but that criteria was discontinued the following year. This time, the change is for the foreseeable future and not in response to a global crisis.
The Tour previously announced that events hosted by prominent players — The Genesis (Tiger Woods), the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial (Jack Nicklaus) would be in the “elevated events” category along with the Match Play, the Phoenix Open, The Heritage, Wells Fargo and Travelers. Top 20 guys from the PIP (Player Impact Program) are required to play in the elevated events.
Cameron Young and Sahith Theegala jumpd into the TOC field by making it to the Tour Championship. Others who will be at Kapalua include Presidents Cup International Team members Adam Scott, Sungjae Im, Corey Conners and Hero World Challenge repeat winner Viktor Hovland.
The Tournament of Champions (Jan. 5-8) kicks off a busy first month of the season for the PGA Tour.
Here’s what the rest of the January schedule looks like:
Sony Open: January 12-15 at Waialae Country Club.
American Express: January 19-22, LaQuinta.
The Farmers: January 25-28, Torrey Pines.
