Turn up the heat, bring on the pressure, this one’s supposed to go to the good old USA for so very many reasons.
There’s only one problem.
Mr. Murphy has been hanging out in the United States team room for the past three Ryder Cups.
As in Murphy’s Laws of Ryder Cup golf.
A player who has never choked, will.
There is no ME in team.
And the list could go on and on.
But that’s the main problem with these battles between the United States and Europe — it’s a team event.
The players from the United States have no concept of “team.” Today’s world of golf, today’s modern PGA Tour has turned into a weekly cast of prima donnas who are multi-millionaires at an early age — guys like Rickie Fowler wondering which $14 million house they should buy.
Anyone out there think that Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson care about anyone’s bank account but their own?
It’s a fact. Our guys fly their own private jets, hang out in their own waterfront mansions and come and go every week as individuals.
The European Tour is a different animal. It doesn’t go to different states, it travels different countries and the players actually know each other. They spend more time during the year with each other, they understand the true team concept.
Pretty simple.
Europe is a huge underdog this week and they will use that as motivation.
Johnny Miller gave them some pretty good motivational material with this comment:
“Europe on paper is one of the worst teams they’ve had in years.”
There’s only one problem — the matches are not contested on paper.
Weak-in-the-knees team captain Davis Love III has deemed this: The best team ever assembled.
That’s sure a pie in the face of Tiger Woods, isn’t it?
Rory McIlroy zinged back with this one:
“Well, they certainly have the best Task Force ever assembled”
Booo-yaaa!!
Later, when he got serious about it, Rory gave some more insight:
“Whenever we are going against one of the greatest teams every assembled, that’s motivation enough. How good a victory would this be if we go out and beat these guys on their home soil?”
Amen, Rory.
Sergio Garcia had some words of wisdom as well:
“At the end of the day, you don’t win the Ryder Cup with your mouth, you know, you win them out there on the golf course. So that’s what we’ll see, which team is best.”
So come Friday, the rhetoric ends.
Time to play, time to perform.
We’re not going to give you the in-depth breakdown of the teams, that’s been done over and over all over the ‘net the past 30 days.
What we do know is that the U.S. team isn’t coming in with a helluva lot of momentum.
Those who were in the Tour Championship were mediocre as best, save Ryan Moore, who did get zinged by Rory in sudden-death.
Could Rory zing someone again in a crucial Sunday match to win for Europe? You betcha. He is the hottest player in the world right now.
Can Phil Mickelson hit a fairway? Yes, because the PGA of America will have little to no rough at Hazeltine to give Mickelson and his scatter-gun driver a fighting chance.
Cry-baby Mickelson moaned about the setup at East Lake. He should, it wasn’t wild-driver-friendly. It wasn’t supposed to be. It was set up to identify the best player.
So now the fun begins.
Let’s see how The Fellas perform against The Lads when the heat is on.
And hopefully, they can keep Mr. Murphy out of the team room.
What they should do is give movie money to Mr. Murphy and Tiger and send them both off site for a few days.

Excellent article Tom. I have said the same thing for many years. I have traveled the world and had the opportunity to enjoy several European Tour events. The chemistry is different, even with the fans. The European Tour is built around team spirit, camaraderie, and respect.
Unfortunately for Team USA, Phil stole their thunder with his arrogant and stupid comments.
We will see, but I’ll be surprised if the USA wins.

I’m a big European Tour watcher early on Saturday morning, enjoy some of the amazing courses they play.

I’m sorry to say, but I can’t stand Zach “I’m an American sometimes” Johnson!

Well, a guy from Iowa should know better that he’s American all the time….
