After his opening 77 on Thursday, it looked like defending champion Tyrrell Hatton might not be around for the final 36 holes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Hatton, No. 6 in the world, was the highest-ranked player in the field this week but things weren’t looking good going into the final nine holes of his second round on Friday at Bay Hill.
The Englishman did make the turn in two-under par but a bogey at the 11th hole left him four-over par with seven holes to play. Pars at 12 and 13 made his chances even more slim. But then he went on a magical birdie run with four straight. He narrowly missed a fifth at the closing 18th but he made four and finished with a five-under par 67, pulling off the 10-shot improvement feat. He got himself back to even par and easily made the cut, which came at two-over par.
Rickie Fowler Makes It To The Weekend:
Rickie Fowler was basically in the same boat as Hatton after day one. Fowler’s opening 76 and recent form didn’t give him a great shot at making the cut. But things got more difficult on Friday and Fowler’s two-under par 70 got him to the final 36-holes as he made the cut on the number.
Patrick Reed A Cut Casualty:
Patrick Reed’s short game was well suited to Bay Hill’s difficult greens but Reed’s ball-striking left a lot to be desired this week and after rounds of 73-74, he found himself a shot on the wrong side of the cut line.
Nearby Resident Found Tiger Woods Unconscious At Accident Scene:
While an L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy said last week that Tiger Woods was conscious when he arrived on the scene, a nearby resident found Woods unresponsive.
A man found Tiger Woods unconscious in a mangled SUV after the Woods crashed the vehicle in Southern California, authorities said in court documents obtained Friday.
Court documents revealed the man, who lives near the site in Rolling Hills Estates, heard the crash and walked to the SUV. In the affidavit, the man told deputies that Woods would not respond to his questions. The first deputy on the scene, Carlos Gonzalez, has said Woods was able to talk to him and answer basic questions. Woods later told deputies that he did not know how the collision occurred and didn’t remember driving.
Law enforcement has not previously disclosed that Woods had been unconscious following the crash.
