The preparation ends Wednesday.
If you don’t have it by now, you’re not going to find it on Thursday when the 116th U.S. Open begins at treacherous Oakmont.
On a course packed with trouble for players, it was a caddie that was punished by Oakmont on Tuesday. Young Chris Crawford, a qualifier, was fortunate enough to play with Jason Day saw his caddie snap an ankle while entering a bunker.
Day helped the injured player who received prompt medical attention, suffering a broken ankle leaving Crawford to find a new looper.
The players were finishing their work on Wednesday, most will play nine holes at the most.
Rory McIlroy was among those out in the morning when a light rain fell. Heavier rains are expected on Thursday and that could totally disrupt the first round. The problem with a 156-man field on a U.S. Open layout is time logistics. Rounds will push the five and a half hour mark. Slow death if you’re playing poorly.
It could be that the morning starters on Thursday will have an advantage if the rains come in the afternoon. They would have a chance to finish, the afternoon times would not. Could get ugly.
There is also rain possible on Friday, botching things up even more.
The good news is the weekend forecast is for good weather.
