Just 10 short days until they tee it up for the first round of the U.S. Open up there at Erin Hills.
It’s time for a quick U.S. Open stock report, time to go over who’s hot, who’s not and who is basically treading water as the year’s second major is nearly upon us.
Dustin Johnson: D.J. had a miserable first round at The Memorial and the second wasn’t much better. His opening 78 was his worst effort in nearly 15 months. Hasn’t won since his infamous fall took him out of The Masters. Did he peak too soon this season? Tough call here. TRENDING: NEUTRAL.
Rory McIlroy: This recurring rib injury leaves a cloud around Rory. He’s on the sidelines, tough to come off the bench and go straight to the U.S. Open. TRENDING: DOWN.
Jason Day: He’s had his moments. Finished tied for 15th at The Memorial. It’s been a mixed bag for J-Day. TRENDING: SLIGHTLY UP.
Hideki Matsuyama: He’s cooled off, no doubt about it. TRENDING: NEUTRAL.
Sergio Garcia: Took off last week. His game has looked good, has The Masters in hand. TRENDING: UP.
Jordan Spieth: Tough call, looks good, then looks bad. A mixed bag at best: TRENDING: NEUTRAL TO SLIGHTLY UP.
Henrik Stenson: A so-so outing in Sweden last week. TRENDING: NEUTRAL.
Alex Noren: This guy is moving up in the rankings, breaking into the top 10. TRENDING: UP.
Jon Rahm: Has had a really great year so far. Surprise missed cut at The Memorial. Still, should make his presence felt in 10 days. TRENDING: UP.
Kevin Kisner: Won Colonial and had a top 10 last week at The Memorial. TRENDING: UP.
Rickie Fowler: Has his game in order, still making some mistakes at the wrong time, like his wedge shot into 18 Sunday. TRENDING: UP.
Matt Kuchar: Mr. Consistency. TRENDING: UP.
Jason Dufner: He’s pumped after winning The Memorial. TRENDING: UP.
Justin Rose: Has had a quiet year so far. TRENDING: NEUTRAL.
Matthew Fitzpatrick: Runner-up in Sweden. TRENDING: UP.
The one thing we do know about this season so far is that past performance had no indication of future results.
We’ll take a closer look at the favorites next week.
Stay tuned.

One byline story to me is that we are well into the season now, and other than DJ early on, the big guns have been pretty quiet thus far.

That they have. A buddy just asked me what’s wrong with Jordy (Spieth) and it seems he’s still prone to the occasional devil ball. Rory’s ailing, J-Day has been less than stellar. Can’t wait to see who shows up at Erin Hills. Maybe a surprise winner this year!
