The math is simple and it is heavily in favor of the United States going into Sunday’s finale of the 41st Ryder Cup.
It’s 9 1/2 to 6 1/2, U.S. by three full points over Europe.
The math says the USA need to win but five measly points in the 12 singles matches on Sunday at Hazeltine to take the Ryder Cup away from Europe.
It’s 9 1/2 and not nine thanks to a choke by Lee Westwood when he missed a birdie putt from just outside two feet that would have made it 9-7.
Hottest man on the planet Saturday afternoon was Patrick Reed, who put up seven birdies and an eagle to make up for the lackluster play of partner Jordan Spieth as Reed single-handedly beat Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, 2-and-1.
Westwood’s gaff handed a full point to J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore.
The other U.S. point came in a 2-and-1 win by Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson over Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer.
Europe’s only bright spot was once again, Rory McIlroy, this time playing with Thomas Pieters. They won 2-and-1 over Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.
All 12 players from each team will go out in the Sunday singles.
