Harold Varner III came close last year at the Australian PGA.
The former East Carolina University golfer came oh so close to his first professional victory but lost in a playoff.
On Sunday Varner became the king of Queensland, outlasting one little known Aussie and one really famous Aussie.
Varner’s final round 65 gave him a 19-under par outing at the RACV Royal Pines Club, good for a two shot win over Andrew Dodt and four shots better than former Masters champion Adam Scott.
“That was pretty awesome,” Varner said of his 18-hole effort. “I had a lot of fun out there today. I’m now a much better, more mature player than I was 12 months ago,” said Varner, who just completed his rookie year on the PGA Tour.
“Winning is hard,” Varner added. “I don’t care where you tee it up, so to get it done feels great.”
Varner’s final round was 10 shots better than the 75 he closed with in the event last year.
