American Johannes Veerman and England’s Matthew Jordan led the list of 19 survivors who will compete for the title Sunday at the Cyprus Shootout.
Veerman, a former Texas A&M golfer and Jordan both shot seven-under par 64s at Aphrodite Hills to head a field of 19 players who will start from scratch on Sunday with the day’s low score winning the new European Tour format.
The low 16 and ties made it to the final round of the “shootout” format. It took three-under for Saturday’s third round to make it to Sunday. There were four in at that number: Jorge Campillo, Thomas Detry, Richard Bland and Gavin Green were the last men in.
But the fact that they were four shots off the day’s best scores doesn’t matter — everyone starts the same for Sunday — giving 19 players a shot at the title.
Goydos, Jobe Lead Schwab Cup Championship:
Paul Goydos and Brandt Jobe were the day one leaders at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix with seven-under par 64s.
It’s normally the final event of the season for the over-50 set but the PGA Tour has made it a “carry-over” season due to the cancellation of so many events.
Thus, there will be no Schwab Cup won this week at Phoenix Golf Club.
K.J Choi, Mark Brooks and Kevin Sutherland were a shot back at six-under par after the first round in the 54-hole event.
Big guns Jim Furyk and Ernie Els were both in at three-under and tied for 18th, Bernhard Langer was one-under and tied for 36th.
