The heat was heading towards that “tough to handle” range Saturday at Colonial, the “feels-like” temperature was well into the 100s.
Didn’t both Webb Simpson as the former U.S. Open champion played steady golf, shot a three-under 67 and grabbed a two-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round.
Simpson built a two-shot lead over Paul Casey, who holed a twisting birdie putt at the 18th to shoot 68 and post seven-under par. He’ll be paired with Simpson in Sunday’s finale.
“It’s better than what I’ve been doing this season,” Casey said of his putting, which has steadily improved. “I’ve been working really hard on it.”
Danny Lee posted 69 and joined Casey at seven-under. He’ll play in the next-to-last group with Stewart Cink.
Defending champion Jordan Spieth kept himself in contention with a second straight 68 that got him to four-under par, five off Simpson’s lead. Spieth’s caddie, Michael Greller, was sidelined by the heat. Spieth’s trainer toted the bag on Saturday.
As for Simpson, he’ll be looking for his first victory since the 2013 Shriners in Las Vegas.
