The Wells Fargo has been a favorite stop on the PGA Tour mainly because of its setting — Quail Hollow outside Charlotte, a total big-boy golf course.
Quail Hollow is not hosting this year’s event. It is being prepped for the PGA Championship in August.
Eagle Point Golf Club in Michael Jordan’s hometown of Wilmington is the setting for this week’s stop on the PGA Tour. Sanity is restored, the team nonsense is done, time to get back to real business.
Eagle Point is pure golf. No pool, no tennis courts, none of that stuff, strictly golf.
Which begs the question: Will any player have an advantage this week?
The PGA Tour has often been a “horses for courses” situation. James Hahn emerged as the surprise winner at Quail Hollow last year.
Who can win this week? Good news is that world’s No. 1 Dustin Johnson is back in action. Seems there aren’t too many courses you can’t play well when you hit it long, hit it straight, hit great irons and putt well. Kinda like D.J.
Webb Simpson is a member at Quail Hollow and the former U.S. Open champion claims to have played Eagle Point a bunch.
Simpson says it will bring images of Augusta National. Tom Fazio designed Eagle Point. It has tall pines, elevation changes, undulating greens, false fronts. It is very, very green and will give that Augusta National visual.
They can stretch it past 7,300 yards.
Outside of Simpson, most of the field will be seeing the golf course for the first time.
So who has the advantage this week?
That’s easy.
No one.
At least when it comes to local knowledge.
A favorite? Rust or no rust, Dustin Johnson is always the guy to watch.
He’s back.
