The 2016 major season is over.
Time for a little look back and we’ll do this two ways.
First, of the four major winners, we’ll see who fared best in all four.
Second, we’ll take a look at the non-major winners and there are some big names there, of course, to see who fared the best among those lads.
First things first, your major champions:
DANNY WILLETT (MASTERS): Won at Augusta; T37 at U.S. Open; T58 at Open Championship; T79 at PGA.
DUSTIN JOHNSON (U.S. OPEN): T4 at Augusta; Won U.S. Open; T9 at Open Championship; Missed Cut at PGA.
HENRIK STENSON (OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP): T24 at Augusta; WD U.S. Open; Won Open Championship; T7 at PGA.
JIMMY WALKER (PGA): T29 at Augusta; Missed Cut at U.S. Open; Missed Cut at Open Championship; Won PGA.
It’s easy to see that Jimmy Walker fared the worst, overall, missing two cuts. Willett won the Masters but didn’t finish higher than 36th after that, give him credit though, he made the cut in all four, the only man among the four major champions to do that.
Dustin Johnson could easily have been the best but he did miss the cut at the PGA, otherwise he has the U.S. Open win, a top five and a top 10 in the others. Nice work D.J.
Henrik Stenson has the Open win and the top 10 at the PGA, a top 30 at Augusta but withdrew at missed the U.S. Open.
Our award for best showing in the majors combined goes to Dustin Johnson, overall, best work of the bunch, even though he didn’t show up at Baltusrol.
Now for some other guys you might recognize:
JORDAN SPIETH: T2 at Augusta; T37 at U.S. Open; T30 at Open Championship; T13 at PGA.
JASON DAY: T10 at Augusta; T8 at U.S. Open; T22 at Open Championship; Runnerup at PGA.
RORY MCILROY: T10 at Augusta; Missed Cut at U.S. Open; T5 at Open Championship; Missed Cut at PGA.
BUBBA WATSON: T37 at Augusta; T51 at U.S. Open; T39 at Open Championship; T60 at PGA.
RICKIE FOWLER: Missed Cut at Augusta; Missed Cut at U.S. Open; T46 at Open Championship; T33 at PGA.
Easy to see that Rickie Fowler simply stunk up the place this year when it came to the majors. Sorry Rickie, the truth hurts.
Rory McIlroy was downright rotten at the U.S. Open and PGA but got a top 10 in the Masters and fifth at the Open Championship to make up for it.
Bubba Watson wins for best overall mediocre performance during the 2016 major season. Was never a factor anywhere but did make all four cuts.
Jordan Spieth wins the Oscar for Best Collapse In A Major, thanks to the 12th tee at Augusta National. But give the kid credit, he made all four cuts but certainly underachieved for his talent level.
Best Performance By A Man Not Winning A Major: Easily goes to Jason Day. He showed up, competed hard in all four, contended in three of them.
And that’s what you expect from the world’s No. 1.
