Two of the biggest names in the field left early, leaving Nate Lashley and Cameron Champ in the spotlight going into the weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland and world’s No. 2, Dustin Johnson missed the 36-hole cut at Detroit Golf Club Friday. It took five-under par to make it to the weekend and neither Woodland or D.J. came close. Woodland went 73-69 while a pair of 71s didn’t cut it for Johnson.
Lashley birdied the final hole Friday to follow-up his opening 63 with 67 and his 14-under par total is the low 36-hole effort on the PGA Tour this season. But he’s only one clear of Cameron Champ who put up rounds of 66-65.
Rickie Fowler, the unofficial host of the event is a half-dozen shots back after dueling 68s.
Charles Howell III, who turned 40 this week, was two shots off the lead at 12-under.
