The Wyndham Championship is the PGA Tour’s version of “Last Call.”
It’s the last call for players who want to get a regular season win.
First round leaders Kevin Na and Rafa Cabrera-Bello fall into that category.
It’s getting near last call for players trying to make the Ryder Cup team.
Rickie Fowler falls into that category.
It’s last call for players who want to reach the top 125 and make the playoffs.
There are a bunch of bubble-dwellers in that category.
Low scoring is the name of the game at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. This city was forever, seemingly, the old site of the GGO, the Greater Greensboro Open, which was often played right before The Masters. Now it’s the Wyndham and it falls in the last regular season spot on the PGA Tour schedule.
Na is glad to be here. “I played really great today,” said Na, who has been a consistent money winner but has only one PGA Tour win to his credit. “I made a lot of putts. The putter has not been that hot this year. But it was good today. It’s a great course for me and I’m happy to be here.”
Bello is a staple on the European Tour and finished competing in the Olympics last week. He has two European Tour wins and would like to get one on the PGA Tour. While Na’s round had seven birdies, no bogies, Bello had five birdies and an eagle.
Fowler opened with 67 and needs Ryder Cup points. Right now he’s outside the automatic qualifiers and with his record this season, he might not make it as a captain’s pick. He came right from the Olympics to try and go low this week.
At the end of the day, 74 players shot under par, meaning if you’re not well under par come Friday afternoon, you might be going home early.
