Seems the good folks in Scotland are fired up for their side as once again the European Solheim Cup team finds itself as an overwhelming underdog to the Americans.
The event at Gleneagles is a total sellout and crowds were large for the opening matches on Friday.
Play began with foursomes (alternate shot) with expected cool temperatures and steady winds.
Each team had an early blowout going.
The Korda sisters, Nelly and Jessica, were crushing the life out of Caroline Masson and Jodi Ewart Shadoff. The Korda started out with four birdies and an eagle over their first nine holes and were a convincing five-up with six holes to play. The Korda ended it all, 6-and-4, and put up the first points of the matches for the Americans.
The European duo of Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier were having their way with Americans Lexi Thompson and Brittany Alomare. The Europeans were a comfortable four-up with five holes to play but the Americans cut into the lead and took the match to the 17th but it ended there when pars halved the hole and the Team Europe got its first point.
The other two matches were hotly contested.
Megan Kang and Annie Park for the U.S. were tied with Charley Hull and Azahard Munoz after 10 holes while Morgan Pressel and Marina Alex held a one-up lead over Europeans Bronte Law and Carlota Cigunda after 14 holes.
Cigunda made a huge putt at the 17th and by the end of 18, there was no blood with each side getting half a point.
Hull and Munoz won the 17th to close out their match with Kang and Park. Their 2-and-1 win gave Team Europe a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 lead after the morning session.
Four-Ball (best-ball) matches were on tap for the afternoon session.
