A problem which many golfers suffer from, at some point during their development, is slicing the golf ball. How often have you sliced the ball off the tee at your local club or witnessed other players doing it? It’s a common problem but today, we have some great tips which will help to eliminate the slice from your drive.
For amateur players especially, when trying to cure a slice one of the things which happens most often, is it actually becomes worse. Simply aiming further to one side, in the hope the ball will swing back on to the fairway, is not the correct way to cure a slice. In fact, despite seemingly aiming away from the fairway, with an open stance, by the time the club connects with the ball it’s going to add more slice spin and that’s the last thing we want to happen.
So, to remedy this, the first thing we need to do, is square our shoulders up to the target. In addition to this, ensure the feet are also square or slightly closed, both are better than having an open stance.
Many people try and grip the club hard, in order to avoid hitting a slice. However, the tighter the grip on the club, the less the wrists will roll and close the face through impact, so this is to be avoided. Instead, maintain a firm grip but keep it supple, by doing this, the hands will become part of the swing and you will produce fewer slices as a result.
We have a great drill, which can be practiced regularly and will help to cure the slice shot. Pick up your driver as you usually would, using you left hand but with your right hand, grip the club below the grip and on to the actual shaft of the driver. With this grip in place, make some three-quarter swings and notice how you can feel the head of the club turning over during the down swing. By completing the drill regularly, the hands will release more effectively and this will help in preventing the ball being hit with an open face.
The cure to hitting a slice is not to aim further away from the target area. Take the time to implement the tips above and use the practice drill, as this will lead to a decrease in slicing the ball, the correct way.
