Things took a slight turn Saturday in Boston. Here’s how things shook out during the second round of the Dell at TPC Boston:
First round leader Dustin Johnson finally had a so-so day. His one-over par 72 dropped him back to four-under and left the door open for a lot of contenders.
Jon Rahm has immense talent and he’s got a temper as well. That temper could have taken over after his first nine holes but it didn’t. Rahm was struggling over the back nine, first nine of the day. He was two-over through eight then hit his approach at the par five 18th within 12 feet and made eagle to get his round going and man did he get going. Rahm went to the front nine, birdied two, three and four, seven and nine and shot 31 coming home for a 66. He’s nine-under and has a two-shot lead heading in Sunday’s moving day.
Jordan Spieth said he needed an attitude adjustment and that’s what he did. He went out Saturday and shot 65 to get himself to five-under and in the hunt going into the final 36 holes.
Paul Casey and Adam Hadwin had 65s of their own and they are two-shot back of Rahm at seven-under along with Kyle Stanley.
Phil Mickelson revealed that he’s suffering from some kind of ailment. He wouldn’t reveal the nature of said ailment but it was causing fatigue. Lefty says he’s taken care of that with his doctor and now he’s feeling better and it showed in his game this week. He’s shot 69-67 and is six-under, just three back of the lead.
Grayson Murray is the bubble-boy this week. He came in at No. 70 and needs to be there or higher to move on to the BMW in two weeks. He’s doing something about it. He’s six-under along with Mickelson.
Rory McIlroy missed the 36-hole cut. He was four-over and there are no indications that his game has turned the corner. Makes you wonder how he’s feeling.
Adam Scott came back after the birth of his second child but now he can go back home. He missed the cut, shot four-over like Rory and he’s No. 83, his playoffs have ended.
TPC Boston has been pretty challenging. Three-over par made the 36-hole cut.
