The good news for Rickie Fowler is that he’s not dead last after two rounds of the Tour Championship.
Bad news is he is 29th out of 30 players, only Kevin Chappell has saved Fowler from the cellar so far.
Fowler came to the Tour Championship with high hopes and a high standing in the FedEx Cup points list. He was just outside the top five at number six, the position Rory McIlroy won it all from last year.
But it has been a miserable two days for Fowler. He opened with 73 and was a shot worse on Friday. He got off to a miserable start with a double and two bogeys on the front nine at East Lake and never recovered.
Fowler is not the only highly-touted contender to flounder.
Hideki Matsuyama, who was the points leader for most of the season, has played poorly through all the playoff events and hasn’t played well at East Lake. Rounds of 75-68 have left him in 26th place.
Marc Leishman, winner last week at the BMW, is apparently suffering from a victory hangover. After rounds of 71-71, the fourth-ranked player in the points race finds himself nine shots behind the leaders.
