PGA Tour And It's "Amateur Dilemma" - What If The Lowest Score Doesn't Win At Tour Championship? - Dog Leg News

About the author

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

Imo they are trying too hard to make it fair when it does not need to be. It should not be.

This Years ‘postseason’ ended up being a bunch of fall season winners. What’s the point of that?

Just play off. It’s that simple.
Play off every round of the playoffs (maybe a few byes) And you will have an awesome playoffs.
    That’s the only solution.
Any creative idea for the playoffs is simply too complicated when it doesn’t need to be.
    Just play off.

This system is so “flawed”, we’re introducing our changes to it on Friday…

I didn’t understand this when it was instituted, and I still don’t. Every tournament throughout the year starts with everyone even. The tour is the tour. Some play better than others, but the one who plays the best over the four days of the tournament wins. Why should this tournament be any different, especially when it is supposed to be the best of the best as determined over the entire season of play? Besides getting rid of the ridiculous, artificial, backwards handicap, some other suggestions for changes over the three tournaments have been offered by others. I agree with some of those suggestions as they simply make good sense.

That’s the thing Tom there’s a million ways to do it but the question to ask yourself is will casual fans get it?
Even golfs traditional scoring is too complicated for many casual observers which the sport is trying to bring in.
It needs to be simple. Easy to understand. Otherwise it’s no help.
