Arnold Palmer was never one to get caught up in swing mechanics. That’s the way it was with many great players of his generation.
It was about feel, instincts and work.
For today’s lesson, with the action this week at the Bay Hill Club, Arnold’s Florida headquarters for decades, we’re cracking the archives for a lesson from The King himself.
Arnold talks about one of his full-swing keys for his takeaway. Palmer admits that one of his problems over the years was getting too fast with his takeaway, especially with the driver.
“Get the club away from the ball deliberately,” Palmer says in this segment, deliberately as in slower.
Then Arnold gets down to business with the putter where once again, he foregoes mechanics and tells us he relies on instinct and feel for the length of the putt.
Pretty good advice. Seems like too many amateurs these days get caught up with swing mechanics rather than learning to take the tension out of the swing.
One of Arnold’s great sayings was:
“Swing your swing.”
He meant all of us have our own unique swing and that we should learn to play with that swing and not try to copy someone else’s.
Great wisdom from The King.
