Finally there will be some woman-power at the PNC Father-Son Challenge.
They’ve played 22 of these, always staged about this time every year. This year puts a big asterisk next to that “Father-Son” description with the addition of a “Father-Daughter” team and that “Daughter” part of the team had a lot of firepower in her day.
Annika Sorenstam is 49 now, believe it or not and one of the greatest players in the history of women’s golf will tee it up with her father, Tom Sorenstam, at the Ritz Carlton Grande Lakes Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday in the 36-hole scramble-format competition.
Annika should get a lot of air-time seeing as she’s broken the gender glass ceiling in this event.
The professionals have to be major champions or have won the Players Championship. Only one member of the team can be a card member of a major professional tour.
Lee Trevino has played in every one of these and he’s back with son Daniel. Jack Nicklaus will wipe the cobwebs off his clubs and play for the second year with grandson G.T.
Two Harringtons are better than one and you’ve got Paddy and Paddy representing Ireland.
Tom Watson will be there with son Michael. They’re still in mourning over the recent loss of Tom’s wife Hillary, who was taken by pancreatic cancer a couple of weeks ago.
Then there’s the camera-hog team of Daly and Daly. John Daly will play following a recent knee replacement, so we don’t have to listen to him complain about how he needs a cart to get around. The older he gets, the more Little John Daly resembles his old man.
In all, it’s fun and games, the not-so-stressful scramble format and nice weather on tap for Orlando.
