Gotta love Brandel Chamblee.
Call him the Golf Channel’s “Enforcer.”
When everyone else is spouting nothing but champagne and caviar when it comes to all things golf, you can count on Chamblee to put the hammer down on just about anyone when he deems it the right thing to do.
Following the Presidents Cup, the talk always begins about Ryder Cup and who might be future captains of the American team.
Chamblee doesn’t think it should be Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods.
“I don’t think its appropriate to give players leadership roles in an event they didn’t show passion for when they were competitors,” Chamblee said on a recent broadcast.
Chamblee pointed to the 2014 Ryder Cup to indict Mickelson. That year at Gleneagles, Chamblee pointed out that Mickelson did not travel with the team, he arrived on his own. Mickelson also turned against team captain Tom Watson. “I think he corrupted the team from the inside out,” Chamblee declared. “These are not leadership qualities. I get it. Everyone looks up to him and respects his record. But really should give it to people who have passion for it.”
Woods hasn’t exactly had a stellar record in the Ryder Cup. Overall, he’s 13-14-2.
Woods hasn’t exactly been a buddy to the rest of the players on tour. Sure, he has his inner circle, but over the years, he’s encased himself in a cocoon of sorts and hasn’t exactly shown himself to be a “team guy.”
The PGA of America runs the Ryder Cup and basically chooses the captains in a process that is largely done behind closed doors.
Will Mickelson and Woods be future captains?
Only time will tell for sure.
