It’s over, the PGA Tour’s regular season that is. With it comes some mighty happy guys and some really, really disappointed players.
They call them the Bubble Boys — the guys hanging just above and below the magical No. 125 that punches your ticket to the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs. It’s also the cutoff for full playing privileges for 2016-17.
Here’s the happy and sad of events from last week’s Wyndham Championship:
SHAWN STEFANI: Here’s the guy who is the happiest. He made the biggest upward move. Started the week at 133 and jumped all the way to 123. He shot 12-under par, tied for 14th and that punched his ticket to Bethpage Black, site of this week’s Barclays.
KYLE STANLEY: Stanley was on the outside looking in at No. 127. Like Stefani, he shot 12-under and tied for 14th to move to No. 116.
SEUNG-YUL NOH: You can be sure that Noh was really sweating it out after missing the cut on Friday. He was No. 122 and only dropped to 125 making him Mr. Bubble Boy, The Anchor Man.
THE UNHAPPY:
MATT JONES: Brutal week for the Aussie. He came in at No. 124 and missing the cut was the last thing he needed to happen. But that’s what happened and he fell to No. 126.
WHEE KIM: While one Kim was getting doused in champagne by his father, another Kim was desperately in need of a stiff drink. Whee Kim came into the tournament sitting in the Anchor Position: No. 125. He needed to at least make the cut. He didn’t and dropped to 127. Ugh!
There you have it. That was the good news-bad news side of the PGA Tour this week.
Now it’s on to the playoffs, four events with the FedEx Cup and $10 million smackeroos on the line.
The top 125 go to the Barclays, then it’s down to 100, then 70 with only the top 30 moving to Atlanta.
