Sure, Jason Day has grabbed all the FedEx Cup playoff headlines.
No doubt about that, and deservedly so.
But the biggest winner in these playoffs may be rookie Daniel Berger, the former Florida State University golfer.
A year ago Berger was earning his tour card with a solid season on the Web.com Tour, pretty far from the big time. This past week at the BMW, he made the biggest jump of any player on tour. His runner-up finish to Day catapulted him from 46th to ninth in the FedEx Cup standings.
That’s pretty spectacular in and of itself but consider where Berger was coming into the playoffs.
The kid had missed seven straight cuts on the PGA Tour. Seriously. That bears repeating — seven straight cuts. He was no where in the running for Rookie of the Year honors, that looked to be a two-man duel between Justin Thomas and Tony Finau with Thomas having the upper hand last week.
What Berger has accomplished is amazing. His 12th place finish at the Deutsche Bank netted him $138,000 then last week that runner-up was good for a whopping $891,000! Yikes.
His earnings now total $2,832,551. Way to go rook!
If his form continues, that number could go way up come Sunday at East Lake.
No matter how he plays, Berger is already a huge winner in these playoffs.
Will he win Rookie of the Year? Both Thomas and Finau failed to make the top 30 and they won’t be at East Lake.
Berger? He’s there and on a roll.
