Those poor guys who plays exclusively on the European Tour haven’t teed it up since February 7 — the day of the final round at the Saudi Invitational — won by world’s No. 1 Dustin Johnson.
A few of the Tour’s elite players made it into the field at the WGC-Workday, but most have been stuck at home, working on their games. The Euro Tour is back, finally, this week with the Qatar Masters beginning on Thursday.
Thomas Detry, Rasmus Højgaard, Andy Sullivan, Wade Orsmby, Brandon Stone and Aaron Rai were in the field at The Concession and will be playing thisweek at the Education City Golf Club.
The event made the switch to Education City last year.
One of this week’s favorites is former Ryder Cupper Thomas Pieters of Belgium. Pieters ranks inside the top 20 on the Euro Tour stats for stroke average, Strokes Gained Off The Tee, Scrambling and Putting. Pieters tied for 15th two weeks ago at the Puerto Rico Open.
Most of the European high-profile stars are in this week’s field at The Players Championship.
No European Events In Florida?
European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley raised some eyebrows before the WGC-Workday when he said the Tour was considering holding some events in Florida after The Masters.
Rory McIlroy said that’s not going to happen. Rory addressed the subject in his presser at The Players. “Pretty sure it’s not going to happen, which is a good thing because I think it means things are starting to get a little better back in Europe,” McIlroy said
Rory may be a little more in the know these days. He has been elected to serve as chairman of the Player Advisory Council on the PGA Tour.
“I think with the new strategic partnership between the PGA Tour and the European Tour, I think that is the beginning of something that could become quite significant,” McIlroy said Tuesday at The Players.
