It was one short hole at the 2019 Phoenix Open, the famous/infamous 16th, the rowdy par three but it gave Gary Woodland enough inspiration to go forth and win his first major championship.
Amy, who has Down Syndrome, didn’t hesitate to accept the challenge and introduced everyone to what has become her catch-phrase — “I got this….”
Amy was greeted with hearty applause and gave the heart-warming reaction: “They love me.”
We all loved Amy after her tee shot caught a greenside bunker then she got her second within 10-feet for par.
“It goes a little left,” Woodland told her.
“I got this,” Amy responded.
She stepped up and drained the par putt, huge applause.
“You are so awesome,” Woodland told her and he spoke for everyone on site that day and for everyone who would watch the replay of Amy playing the hole.
It was an awesome moment.
Later in the year, after Woodland won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, he surprised Amy with an appearance on the NBC Today Show.
The two have formed a special bond and ever since, Amy’s been a national inspiration. She used her celebrity to form the I Got This Foundation. It’s goal is to provide instruction and playing opportunities for people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities.
Amy doesn’t act like it’s a disability. She’ll be playing junior college golf at Paradise Valley Community College.
Her foundation is already a huge success, it’s raised millions for the cause and Amy’s in-demand for celebrity pro-ams.
