Finally, after three days of thrashing around at Austin Country Club, the “real” match play begins at the WGC Match Play.
World No. 1 Jon Rahm and No. 2 Collin Morikawa have both advanced, others from the top 10 moving to Saturday’s matches include last year’s runnerup Scottie Scheffler and Dustin Johnson from the world’s Top 10.
Highly-ranked players going home early included No. 4 Patrick Cantlay along with No. 3 Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele. Bryson DeChambeau played horribly and is out as is Louie Oosthuizen.
The round of 16 begins in the morning and one of the matches features the finalists from last year squaring off — Scheffler vs. 2021 winner Billy Horschel.
Biggest surprises in the round of 16 include 56th-seed Takumi Kanaya, 54th seed Richard Bland and 42nd seed Seamus Power.
Bland will have his hands full as he faces Brooks Koepka in the morning. Kanaya plays Canadian Corey Conners while Power goes against European Ryder Cupper Tyrrell Hatton.
