About the author

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

It Happens to the best of em.

But what I’m tired of is all this talk that anything can happen in match play; as if stroke play always ends up chalk. Since when do top ranked guys never have a bad day much less 4 bad days in stroke play?

    It Happens all the time.

Even more annoying is the talking heads noting projected stroke play scores to determine how the pair played. This could not be more misleading. Match play has so many tiny intricacies—often someone playing well can tell when their opponent isn’t up to the task, so they can take it easier, risk less, play accordingly, knowing they can make a few small mistakes (like bogeys) and likely not lose ground.

A “higher score” does not necessarily mean they played poorly. It’s match play. The job is to beat the opponent on each hole. The overall stoke play score could not be more insignificant, yet they love to talk about it all the time.

Back in the ancient days (when I was in high school), all of our matches were Match Play, we had inter-club teams in the DC area as well, we lost in the finals one year to the rich kids from Congressional….I’ve played more match play than I care to admit….as Tyrrell Hatton said: “Very stressful!”

Pga jr league has become the place for consistent junior golf match play through high school now that they added all ages under 18.

Only it’s played in teams of 2 and scramble format. But still match play. Very stressful. Very exciting.

Golf at its best tests nerves. This is why the real ancients, the experts of golf, the people that invented it, used match play.
Now we follow tv producers lead. It’s kinda sad really.
Ratings can be so misleading. I watch every pga tour event and outside of major Sundays I mostly watch on my own as the fam takes a peek here and there.
But everyone seems to hang out watching a lot more for this match okay event. And No one really cares who is playing. It’s just fun to watch scenario after scenario okay out. I really wish the tv suits got this. There really should be more than one match play event.
