This one was pretty laughable from the very start.
One player you will not see at East Lake this week is Jordan Spieth.
In a forgettable season, Spieth missed the top 30 for the first time and in the process, did not appear in 25 events, which left him in violation of one of the tour’s plethora of ridiculous rules.
There was banter in the golf universe that Spieth could receive a hefty fine, perhaps even face suspension.
Seriously? Anyone out there think for one moment that the PGA Tour was going to play hardball with one of its true Golden Boys? No how, no way.
So naturally, Andy Pazder, the PGA Tour Chief of Operations which is the fancy title for one of Commish Jay Monahan’s “henchmen,” has come forward to let everyone know that all is well with the world and Jordan Spieth in particular.
“I have talked to Jordan and we’ve resolved it,” Pazder said. “We have come to a resolution. I’m not going to be able to share the details of that, I will say the result is something that you will see next season. It’s resolved in a way that’s going to be a win for our tournaments, our fans and for golf in general.”
And that’s tour-speak for “we gave Jordy a little scolding, he said it would never happen again and we said, great! Play in one of the crappy events next season that has a really terrible field.” To which Spieth probably said, “Ok, which one?” To which henchman Pazder probably said: “We’ll get back to you on that.”
So no, there’s no suspension for Jordan Spieth, no disciplinary action, probably no fine unless he’s required to contribute $5,000 to the Commissioner’s slush fund or some other worthy charity.
No, missing East Lake was punishment enough for Jordy.
Besides, he needs to rest up, practice and figure out how to not play poorly at the upcoming Ryder Cup matches.
