Hitting out of fairway bunkers is often a problem for mid-to-high handicappers and even the best players miss ’em at times.
Today, former PGA Tour professional, now one of the most-recognized teachers in the game — Larry Rinker — gives us a short-and-sweet yet very effective pointer on how to properly hit shots from fairway bunkers.

It’s not rocket science and it’s not all that complicated.
Larry explains how you need to strike the ball on its equator to hit that nice-looking shot into the greens.
Seems almost too simple — choke up on the club at address in the bunker so at address, the leading edge of the club is in line with the equator of the golf ball.
The most important thing with these shots is to get out and practice them.
Some will say the easiest way is to simply not his your drives in fairway bunkers. Depends on the course where you play. Very often, municipal courses will not have a lot of fairway bunkers. They slow down play and aren’t inexpensive to maintain.
But if you travel to a resort course or play on of those Jack Nicklaus-laden tracks that overflow with fairway bunkers, you might want to get in some practice and keep Larry’s tip in mind.
