Mardy Fish bogeyed his first hole Saturday at the American Century Championship.
Then he did something that’s never been accomplished in the history of the event — he birdied 10 of the final 17 holes at Edgewater Tahoe Golf Club for a nine-under par 63 that translated to a single-day record 37 points.
Fish’s 63 established a new course record and it got him to the top of the leaderboard with 55 points, three better than second place Kyle Williams. Williams, the first round leader, shot 72 and added 26 points to the 25 he recorded on day one.
Fish went low with a “go-fot-it” mentality. “I decided to just hit drivers and three-woods off the tee as hard as I can, I know what I can do with my irons,” Fish said after his sizzling round.
The tournament has boiled down to a two-man race between Fish and Williams. Pre-tournament favorite Tony Romo never got much going and then injured his left wrist on a chunky wedge shot on the 14th hole. Romo had the wrist taped on the 17th hole and finished but looked to be in pain. He was in with 36 points, one behind John Smoltz and tied with Derek Lowe and Dell Curry.
Fish is trying to win the event for the first time.
Warren Shares Lead, MAJ Fades At Austrian Open:
It became apparent on Saturday that Miguel Angel Jimenez will not win the Austrian Open at age 56.
Miguel showed his age on moving day at the Diamond Country Club outside Vienna. He held the overnight lead but a 77 dropped him all the way into a tie for 12th, five behind co-leader Marc Warren of Scotland and Nicolai Von Dellingshausen of Germany.
Conditions got tougher and both Warren and Von Dellingshausen shot 70s and are in at 11-under, the number where Jimenez started the day.
