Sports Illustrated came up with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award to recognize those who have shown the ideals of sportsmanship, leadership and philanthrophy.
There were only two recipients prior to today and now Jack Nicklaus is the first professional golfer to receive the honor.
Eunice Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, was honored in 2008 and Magic Johnson was honored in 2014.
There was a quote from Muhammad Ali talking about Nicklaus’ achievements that led to the award but there’s no way it came from the former heavyweight champ. Ali is battling the advanced stages of Parkinsons disease and it has taken away his ability to speak. He makes fewer public appearances these days.
Jack and wife Barbara have become huge supporters and are the driving forces behind the Nicklaus Childrens Hospital in Miami. Since its inception, it has expanded to include seven out-patient center around South Florida.
Nicklaus’ professional golf record is without equal and his sportsmanship reputation has been with him throughout his career and beyond.
