Fifty-four holes, 17 birdies, no bogeys for Ben An.
That’s good enough for just a one-shot lead going into the final round at the birdie-friendly Wyndham Championship.
An shot 66 and the closest he came to a bogey on Saturday at Sedgefield Country Club was on the par five 15th. An blew his tee shot way right into some ugly-looking long stuff. It was so bad he chose to hit a provisional, just in case. That one found the creek left. So luckily they found his wayward tee shot and with a great fourth shot, was able to save par and keep his card clean on moving day.
His 66 got him to 17-under par, just a shot in front of hometown guy Webb Simpson (65) and Brice Garnett (66). Simpson finished first and will be in Sunday’s final pairing with An.
Ryan Armour was alone at 15-under after shooting 65.
Viktor Hovland tied for the day’s low round and his 64 left him with a chance to make a Sunday run. “I will have to shoot a really good score to have a chance,” Hovland admitted as he is looking to join former college stars and new rookies Collin Morikawa and former teammate Matt Wolff in the 2019 winner’s circle. Hovland is in at 14-under along with Paul Casey (65) and J.T. Poston (66).
