They turned out in droves Thursday at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club to watch one of their own.
Brooke Henderson has become a big-time golf attraction in Canada and this week’s Canadian Pacific Open is a home game for the young star.
But things didn’t go as planned in the first round for Henderson, who is a member at the host course. Henderson’s putter went cold and she managed just one birdie the entire day and finished with a disappointing three-over par 74. It left her a whopping eight shots behind leader Alex Marina.
Marina, one of the emerging Americans, had six birdies on her way to a field-leading 66.
“The putter kind of let me down at times,” Henderson lamented. “One birdie, that’s the real problem.”
Another player expected to do well was Lydia Ko, who won this event as an amateur. It’s been a rough year for Ko and that theme carried over to the first round as she only managed to shoot one-under par.
Angel Yin, one of the rookie stars of the American Solheim Cup team, shot 68, a shot better than veteran Solheim Cupper Stacy Lewis.
