On Borrowed Time: Tiger Woods Reminds Us How Fragile His Playing Future Has Become - Dog Leg News

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

You have to laugh at the irony of calling for Norman’s removal. For years the pga tour has been destroying all other tours around the world with its insistence of a 48 week season. The Australian and Sunshine tours have been decimated and the European tour is a shadow of its former self. Now it’s the pga tour in the crosshairs and it seems the bully doesn’t like being bullied.

Talk of settlements might never have been needed if Monahan had answered the phone 12 months ago. His refusal to talk to anyone is why we are where we are today. If they are serious about peace and want Norman gone, maybe Monahan stepping aside also might be the right move.

Forky, not sure how it is in the UK but here you don’t have “conversations” with those who are suing you…..Norman has had a 30-year-long vendetta against the PGA Tour; The PGA Tour has not destroyed other tours, it created the Mackenzie Tour in Canada, the Korn Ferry in the US which many have used as their path to the PGA Tour, it has also propped up the DP World Tour with an injection of capital as well……don’t look for Monahan to step aside any time in the next couple of decades. In addition, if you talk to the Aussie players who know him best, they’ll tell you that Greg is only in anything for Greg — that speaks volumes.

Not sure what the UK legal system has to do with anything.. I am neither from or live in the UK. You must be joking about creating the Mackenzie & Korn Ferry tours.. tours just set up to benefit themselves in North America. You can’t expect to have the best players from all over the world to come to the US while at the same time ignoring the world market. The only reason the PGA Tour had to prop up the DP World Tour with an injection of capital is because they have been tearing it down for the last 15 years.

If you talked to the same Aussie players that know Greg best, you would also hear them say how the PGA Tour destroyed the Aussie tour. It’s been very widely reported in the press, but I guess you don’t see that in the little bubble you live in in the US where the world revolves only around you.

Jay Monahan is the most inept leader I have ever come across. He is reactive rather than proactive and looks like a deer in headlights every time he steps in front of the media. If he stays in charge for the next couple of decades, the PGA Tour is in some serious trouble.

Ah, Tim, sorry for the mistake, I take it you live in Australia…..anyway, your own proud Aussie, Adam Scott, declared that the PGA Tour is the best place to play….I’ll take Adam at his word as he’s always been one of the game’s true gentleman and he’s atop the scoreboard at the Aussie Open.
