Golf is a game of pure fundamentals and one of the most important is posture in the setup.
I’ve never seen a good player with poor posture or a poor player with good posture.
Today’s posture model is none other than Tiger Woods. One of the reasons Tiger is one of the greatest ever in the game are his fundamentals.
His setup and posture are perfect and he should be the absolute model for anyone trying to learn this game or get better at this game.
We’ve used a picture of Tiger in shorts to get a better look at the amount of knee bend.
The one thing that really stands out with Tiger is how well he bends at the hips and the perfect angle formed by his back.
Notice that his shoulders are a little past his toe-line. Also, his chin is up. Too many golfers bury their head more toward their chest when they hear that old phrase: “keep your head down.”
Ever hear someone hit a lousy shot and say “I moved my head!” Often it isn’t their head that moved — it’s their spine that moved. The head, after all, is attached to the spine. If the spine angle stays consistent through the swing, the head cannot move.
Also notice how Tiger’s arms hang below his shoulders, totally relaxed. That’s important to remove tension from the setup — TENSION IS YOUR ENEMY IN THE GOLF SWING!
Tiger has a slight bend in his knees as well, overall, he’s in a very relaxed position, ready to start his backswing.
So practice your setup position — it’s easy to do, you can work on it indoors as well.
It’s also a good idea to do some work in a full-length mirror if one is available. You can see the angles you’re forming with your setup.
What you’re looking for is that position as close to Tiger’s as you can get.
A last note, don’t slump or round your shoulders, make sure by moving them toward your spine and that will help you keep a consistent spine angle.
And don’t forget — work on your setup until you get it right.

Have always been impressed with Tiger’s setup; His fundamentals are so, so very good and this is and remains a game of solid fundamentals.

Yes. Tigers fundamentals are underrated in all his genius.

You probably know this but Nicklaus always spent time before he started every season with Jack Grout, his teacher, and they’d check all the fundamentals….
