Yeah, you gotta feel sorry for Rory McIlroy.
The kid has reached the ripe old age of 26 and he’s whining like he’s 76 and broke.
Rory’s latest “feel sorry for me” routine came while he was chatting with the BBC.
Seems Rory is weary of travel, hotel rooms and playing on both the PGA Tour and European Tour.
It’s one thing if he was doing it for, let’s say $100,000 a year, but this kid is hauling in $32 million OFF THE GOLF COURSE. Throw in what he collects for mashing the little white ball and he has some financial comfort to make up for those nights away from home.
Rory is weary and he missed a lot of this season with that bum ankle, courtesy of a pickup soccer interlude with his buddies. For shame!
He told the BBC that the two tours are wearing on him.
“I’ve definitely contemplated it,” McIlroy said of leaving the European Tour behind. “You know, getting sick of the travel, getting sick of having to cross back and forth between tours. The players on the European Tour have had endless dialog about reducing the number of tournaments that you need to play.”
Right now that number is 13. McIlroy played in 12 this year, missing the Open Championship with the above-mentioned soccer ankle. He was given an exemption into the season-ending series for the Race To Dubai, where there’s more big money awaiting him.
Young Rory says he visited 120 airports and spent 287 nights in hotel rooms this year. What he didn’t mention is that a lot of his travel is on private jets and you know he’s not staying at any Motel Six establishments.
What Rory might also did not mention is that his biggest sponsor — Nike — might not be thrilled if he were to abandon Europe. Nike is a world-wide brand and Nike is paying McIlroy HUGE bucks to show off their gear around the globe.
Then in the end, McIlroy back-peddles the question of abandoning the European Tour:
“Have I contemplated? Yes, I have. Would I do it? Probably not.
Meanwhile, somewhere back in Oregon, the powers-to-be at Nike are probably thinking:
“Smart lad you are, Rory!”
