While Jason Day is at home with his wife Ellie, waiting for the arrival of the couple’s second child, Jordan Spieth quietly jumped back into the N0. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings this week.
Day skipped the HSBC Champions event for obvious reasons and Spieth, in his first event of the 2015-16 season, recorded a tie for seventh, his best showing in that WGC event.
Day is No. 2 and Rory McIlroy, who tied for 11th in Shanghai, is still in the third slot.
The biggest news today centers around Phil Mickelson. Mickelson has fallen out of the top 25 for the first time since Sept. 17, 1995. Last week he was No. 25, this week he’s 27th.
Mickelson’s last victory came at the 2013 Open Championship and he hasn’t won since.
Lefty had only three top 10s last year and two weeks ago announced he’s parting ways with longtime swing coach Butch Harmon.
Mickelson, who is now 45, typically does not play in any fall events. He spends most of his time with his family. His next event, most likely, will be the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on January 28 of next year.
