The chase for the FedEx Cup starts on Thursday at the Barclays and basically what you have is the closest thing to a new season without actually starting over from scratch.
The PGA Tour came up with this playoff series and started it back in 2007. Basically, every other major sport has playoffs so Tim Finchem decided it might be a good idea if the tour had the equivalent. Otherwise, back in the day, there wasn’t anything to speak of after the PGA Championship and the tour lost all of its television eyeballs.
That first year worked out great with Tiger Woods winning the inaugural FedEx Cup in 2007.
Today’s task is to examine the past winners of this $10 million season-ending bonanza and ask if this big silver cup has become somewhat of a jinx to the man who hoists it.
Billy Horschel: Billy is the defending champion and Billy has exactly ZERO WINS this season. Could be a jinx.
Henrik Stenson: The ball-striking Swede was the 2013 winner. In 2014 and again in 2015, Stenson had ZERO WINS on the PGA Tour. Stronger evidence of a jinx.
Brandt Snedeker: Sneds was the 2012 FedEx Cup winner. He had two wins in 2013, none in 2014, one in 2015. Jinx strikes in just one year in three.
Billy Haas: The son of Jay Haas took the cup in 2011. Billy had a single win in 2012, one in 2013, none in 2014 and one this season. Billy did a pretty good job of dodging the jinx.
Jim Furyk: Furyk won it in the rain in 2010. He had no wins in 2011, none in 2012, none in 2013, none in 2014 and finally, finally a win in 2015. Jimmy was jinxed big time.
Tiger Woods: Tiger, after winning the inaugural in 2007, won again in 2009. Tiger had no wins in 2010, none in 2011. That’s sure sounds like a jinx. He broke through with three wins in 2012, five in 2013, none in 2014 and none this past season. Sure sounds like the jinx was back. It’s tough to jinx a guy like Woods, but more on that shortly.
Vijay Singh: The Veej was the 2008 winner. He never won again. Total jinx.
Now back to Tiger. After taking the first FedEx Cup, he won the 2008 U.S. Open and three other events that year.
But here’s where it gets interesting. After that 2008 U.S. Open win, Woods hasn’t won another major since. That’s a seven-year drought. Sure has the appearance of a jinx.
Now consider this. That U.S. Open win was the ONLY MAJOR won by any FedEx Cup winner.
Aside from Tiger Woods, none of the other FedEx Cup winners has captured a major.
So is the FedEx Cup a jinx?
Sure sounds like a “Major” jinx, doesn’t it?
