What's A Gribble? Your Newest PGA Tour Winner, Of Course - Dog Leg News

About the author

Tom Edrington

Tom Edrington spent the first 10 years of his misguided youth as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune. His career brought him face to face with many of sports greatest stars -- Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Muhammad Ali, Don Shula, countless Hall of Fame NFL stars, more PGA Tour players than he can count. In 1980 he was honored by the Golf Writers Association of America for writing the best news story that year, his coverage of Jack Nicklaus' U.S. Open victory at Baltusrol. Today, 36 years later, golf is still a great part of his life, thanks to competitive playing days and the wonderful people he has met on this fabulous journey.

great to see Cody come through and win the two year exemption. it goes to show us all how deeeeeeeeeep the fields are now–and that the web.com tour is indeed the way to go. more and more guys every year come out of the competitive minor league tour and excel on the big league tour.
i remember the 1970’s when we would see guys come out of the woodwork to win. in my memory, Tom that is the closest era i can compare this one to–your thoughts on that comparison.

p.s.-buys like Forrest Fezler, Kenny Knox and even Tom Purtzer came out of that era

Believe me, I knew a bunch of guys who were life-time journeymen, like my guy Rex Caldwell, who I once sponsored for a week in a Tampa mini-tour event back in the mid-70s……of course, Rex did not make a check that week…..he also made off with one of my classic old MacGregor 3-woods, one of my high-school set, loaned it but of course it was never returned…..another can’t miss guy was Bill Calfee, MacGregor was drooling over him, totally ready to sign him, alas, took him something like three or four tries to get his card, however, happy ending, Calfee would get a position with the PGA Tour and is finally retiring as President of Web.com Tour, he’s made a LOT more money there then he would have even if he played well on the tour, Calfee, aka “Carefree” did quite well for himself as a Tim Finchem underling.
